To make a person live normally again, treating panic attacks is very important. The disorder, if left untreated, can actually worsen over the years. The person having such attacks may have more severe symptoms if continued to be neglected.

Prolonged anxiety can affect the patient’s social functions. He/she may experience family relationship problems as well as work related problems especially during panic attacks. When a person has panic attacks, he/she usually have this irrational fear and would manifest certain signs and symptoms such as trembling, excessive sweating, rapid heart rate, and shortness of breath.

Usually, when a person is diagnosed with the panic attack, the attending physician will prescribe the patient with medications; however, these medications used for treating panic attacks cannot actually cure the disorder itself. Medications can just lessen the person’s awareness of the anxiety and treat the physical symptoms of the anxiety attack.

Essentially, the medications can’t be used for a long term basis because using these medications also has side effects and sometimes, the side effects are much worse than the actual condition itself. Aside from that, the physician would often only recommend these medications for a short term or temporary relief. Hence, if the condition remains untreated, it will not be corrected and the patient will continue to experience it.

The most common treatment sought would be psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is a broad category and there are subcategories for this treatment regimen. Usually, cognitive behavior therapy is the treatment of choice for correcting a panic disorder. Through this therapy, the patient will be provided with all the necessary information about the condition and determine what could be the possible causes of the condition. Once the person is able to determine the causes, behaviors or coping mechanisms will be taught to the patient so that he/she will be able to adapt to the stress and be able to face the anxiety triggers confidently. By treating panic attacks the patient’s quality of life will be improved.
